Library News – Sep 24th – JSTOR has introduced a Search Widget

Sep 24th – JSTOR has just sent out a “Search” widget that can be placed on a web page.  I grabbed it this morning and incorporated into our Destiny Home page and it works.  There is some modification that needs to happen if patrons access out of our school IP address range, but it looks like a very promising little addition.  Nice Job JSTOR!

FollettShelf has a New eReader for Computers and Personal Devices

Sep 12th.  Well FollettShelf has brought out its new eReader Platform for PC/Macs and Personal Devices.  It is called BryteWave K-12.  The App for personal devices (ipads, iphones, and androids) can be located on the App Store.  The App for PC/Macs can be located at the following address

https://reader.follettshelf.com/mobileReader/brytewavek12/apps.html

I have replaced the former apps on my computer(s) and idevices and have had no problems.  The download of the ebooks has gone smoothly even with the slow bandwidth we have been recently experiencing.  If this really works, it will open a new door to FollettShelf materials and may make them more viable at SAS.

The Teachers are Back and we are….

August 6th.  Today was the first day for returning teachers.  It was great to see everyone back.  The library is “ready”.  Our new books are in and ready for checkout.  We are neat and tidy,  well almost neat and tidy.  Even though we are dealing with some structural issues (leaky air con systems and a few windows that won’t close we are ready for business.  The image of the day, however is below.  There are still some nuts and bolt issues to take care so the following picture I felt summed it all up.  Hope you enjoy.  More fun pictures to come I am sure….. Best Wishes TSBoyer

Into July… Time is flying

July 2nd – We are into July and will fly back to Shanghai in 27 days.  It has been a full summer so far but the high-light was a drop in to the Library of Congress in Washington DC last week.  Wow.  We were not able to get all the way in, but touring the outside areas and seeing the Jefferson Library was a blast.  I will get images from Barbara Boyer soon to add.  It is real fun being a Librarian.  I have been into Barnes and Noble but for just a run in.  I have yet to have a good “shopping” time.  That is coming very soon, in fact next week.

We look forward to seeing our new hires at the end of July and all returning staff and students early in August.

PS.  Make sure to take the time to read a good book. I Have!

SYNC – Sync YA Literature Link

Jun 16th – It has taken me a bit but I have downloaded my first SYNC Audio Book.  The list this summer is good variety.  I have just downloaded “Code Name Verity” by Elizabeth Wein.  If you are in need a good current or classic YA lit audiobook to listen to this summer try out SYNC.  You will need OverDrive Media Console Software.  Best of Luck and good Listening!

Thanks Kathy and Barbara for the link –> http://www.audiobooksync.com/

Sad News — Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou, the author of many books, has died.  The library has pulled as many of her books as possible to create a tribute and we are running a powerpoint on our Library TV.  The images below, from NPR.org, Bing Image Search, and Amazon help give just a small taste of her powerful life and work.

We rejoice in her life and work while morning the lost of her voice….

Coffee with Margriet Ruurs in Shanghai

May 21st – What Luck!  The SLN planning meeting this last Saturday (May 17th) was able to touch base with Margriet Ruurs.  Margriet was in Shanghai working with a school and we were able to overlap.  It was a good time catching up and seeing what her plans were for the future. She will be globe trotting in many parts of the world as she continues her writing projects.  She has many many children’s books to her credit (Her Web Link).  One she spoke of that is close to home is “My Librarian is a Camel” – 2005.   From her web page.  If you have not viewed her page it is a great place to visit.

My Librarian is a Camel

“When we think of a Library, we picture a building on a street or perhaps a room in a school. But some libraries aren’t kept behind four walls. Some move from place to place in the most remarkable ways: by bus, by boat, by elephant, by donkey and more! These unusual mobile libraries are often the only way that people in remote areas such as in Thailand, Mongolia or Azerbaijan can access books.”

From Margriet Ruurs’ WebSite at (http://www.margrietruurs.com/books/my_librarian_is_a_camel.html)

Thanks Margriet! and Best of luck in your trips!
