Book Poems in the Library

Students have been creating book poems by stringing titles of books together. We got the idea from the SAS PX Secondary Library display.

SAS PD Sec Library’s eCollection Links Nearly Complete!

Shanghai American SchoolApril 3rd — The Job of integrating SAS PD Sec Library’s eCollection is almost complete.  By the end of the day, April 4th all of the library’s eCollection Titles will be fully integrated in Destiny.  This includes the OverDrive Titles, FollettShelf Titles, Kindle Titles.  In addition eTitle Links from the Getty Virtual Library and hosted Titles from Project Gutenburg are beginning to make their appearance.  We are growing and improving our ability to use Destiny as our Virtual Hub.  Check out our eTitles by searching the Catalog for eBooks and Kindle Titles. A Big Thanks go to Leah and Glenda (Library Assistants) for putting a huge effort into assisting with retooling of our marc records .  The SAS PD Librarians (Tim Boyer and Barbara Boyer) would like to thank the Taipei American School Librarians and Larry Gilbert (Destiny WorkShot Trainer and friend) for all their assistance and ideas.  We are no where near to where TAS is, but we have made great strides in making our Destiny a complete eLinked hub for our physical and now electronic titles.  We have just about caught up with our backload, and are now ready to FLY!

Try out the Catalog (see links on the Home Page) to see what we have been able to do.  You can search our Catalog for our Kindles by putting in “PD Sec Kindle” into a title or key word search.  Each Kindle Set is now linked in Destiny to Virtual eTitles.  In addition, our Kindle Virtual Titles are back linked to their Kindle Sets.  If you change your search criteria and search the catalog for ebooks you will now see that we have 488 eTitles.  These eTitles are a mixture of FollettShelf Titles, OverDrive eBook Titles, Kindle Titles, Getty Virtual Publication Title Links– an on going project (Art Books).  In time our IB EE’s as well as Project Gutenburg eBooks will begin to appear.

We have worked hard to provide fast identification of each type of book and its location (FollettShelf, OverDrive, Kindle,  eTitle Link, or hosted eTitles).  We have done this by adding Series notations so that patrons do not have to open a title record in order to find out its location.  Upgrades to the Destiny Home Page with OverDrive Links and FollettShelf Links are in place.  Cross links to Static Blog Help pages are appearing.  This will continue to grow and develop as our collection develops and matures.  Please bear with us as we learn how to create pointers and links to our eCollection.  Drop by the library if you have any questions or if you want assistance in linking your computer or iDevice/ Android device to our Catalog holdings.  Remember you always have our catalog at your fingertips anywhere in the world that you have access to a computer or your mobile device.

Come Back often and watch us grow and develop our eCollection!

Book Heart  PS.  Remember You can subscribe to the SAS PD Library Blogs and to both Barbara Boyer and Tim Boyer’s Twitter accounts (Timothy Boyer @SASPDLib, #SASPDLib).  FaceBook is coming this summer, so watch for it.

Dr. Ross Todd visits SAS Pudong

Wow! Dr. Ross Todd of Rutgers University dropped by the SAS Pudong Libraries this morning. We were honored and touched by his willingness to come and see both the Elementary Library (Kimbra Power) and the Secondary Library (Barbara and Tim Boyer). Dr. Todd had just completed a two day ACAMIS 2014 presentation to librarians at SCIS – Pudong where we were inspired to continue our work as librarians and to work to push the envelope as Teacher-Librarians in the ever changing world of Information Literacy. Dr. Todd stressed the point that we are needed and that we must work to do what it takes to assist in the creation of independent deep thinkers and readers. Thank you Dr. Todd for your time and efforts to support librarians and librarianship around the world.  Thank you so much for dropping by the SAS Pudong Libraries.

Libraries are Lucky Places

Libraries are Lucky Places as evidenced by Mrs Boyer finding a 4 leafed clover outside the library this morning. So in honor of libraries and March 17th (St Patrick’s Day) we at the SAS Sec Library give you a hint of spring and a bit of our Luck

At ACAMIS 2014 with Ross Todd

In the second day of the ACAMIS 2014 Library Strand. It is great to listen and interact with other librarians from around the China area.  The info that Ross Todd has been good to hear especially in relation to how important it is for Library to be fully involved in student’s educational lives.

Poets Visit Feb 2014

Anis Mojgani SAS Video Posted

We just posted a Video slide show of many images from Anis Mojgani’s Feb 24th-28th, 2014 visit to Shanghai American School – Pudong on the Video Portal as well as this blog’s Library Moment Page. The Video Link can be found at http://sites.saschina.org/pdlibrary/about/library-moments/anis-mojgani-feb-24-28-2014/ .  Anis is a “MUST HAVE” poet.  He inspired us.

SAS was touched in our hearts and minds by Anis’s visit.  His poetry and his work with students drew students to him.  At the end of the week the SAS Pudong Poetry and Literary Club hosted a Poetry Celebration that drew over 100 students to the library to listen and share poems by candle light.  To get that many students on a Friday afternoon after school for 2 hours for poetry is huge.

Thanks Anis.  Where ever you go, know that you left a lot of yourself here at Shanghai American School and that we will “Shake the Dust” because you were here.  Best Wishes from SAS
