Libraries are Lucky Places
Libraries are Lucky Places as evidenced by Mrs Boyer finding a 4 leafed clover outside the library this morning. So in honor of libraries and March 17th (St Patrick’s Day) we at the SAS Sec Library give you a hint of spring and a bit of our Luck
Mrs Boyer’s 100+ Book List
Mrs Boyer, SAS Pudong Secondary Librarian has created a 100+ Must Read list for Middle School students to have under their belts before they reach high school. This list has many of the classics but many others as well that are just plain fun. The Poets are here!
Feb 24th, 2014. Anis Mojgani, Sara Holbrook, Michael Salinger, and Kenn Nesbitt have arrived at SAS Pudong. Today each had full schedules of assemblies and class presentations. On the HS side, Anis Mojgani wowed high school students with is rapid paced presentation. Between powerful poems Anis provided tidbits of personal information that revealed his life and motivation. Through out the rest of the day he worked with 9th and 10 grade English classes leading them through the creation of personal poems developed by student generated sentences. Thanks Anis. What a way to start the week.
The rest of the week is filled with class contacts that range through the 9th and 10th grade english classes, various upper level writing classes, and two Theater classes. On Wednesday Anis will participate in a “Meet and Greet” with our other visiting poets as they make themselves available to meet with faculty. One the last day, Friday, our visiting Poets will close the week by participating in our Poetry Celebration. HS students will be lead by our Poetry and Literary Clubs in a Time for Poems. YALSA College Bound Book List 2014
- Feb 19th- YALSA (Young Adult Library Services Association, a Branch of the ALA) has just published its 2014 Outstanding Books for the College Bound. This list can be found at the following Web Link (http://www.ala.org/yalsa/outstanding-books-college-bound ). This list is created every 5 years. Library Book Displays
Feb 11th – The Library has active three book displays on the floor. The first, as you enter, is our Poetry Display. This displays many of our poetry books as well as Anis Mojgani’s Poetry Books in honor of the SAS Poetry Slam, Feb 24-28th. The second display is our Romance Book Display in honor of Valentine’s Day this Friday. The final is our Read-alikes “If you like Ann Patchett you like these” Display. Drop by the library to grab that next great read.
Playing with CSS and Curved Tables
Jan 16 — Tonight I have been playing with changing the old square type tables into curved shaped. I found a Curved Table Generator and have been hard at work generating a “new” look for the Front Welcome Page. The site I used to generate the curved CSS/HTML was http://cssround.com/#. The production of the curved tables was not hard. The hard part was trying to figure out how to place them on the page. I finally moved to using transparent square tables where I placed the new round table cells inside. After that, I cut and pasted the images of the authors and their names into the curved boxes. The formatting of the material inside of the curved boxes was tricky and I have jury-rigged the process. It will probably not work in the long-run, but for right now, it looks way better than it did before.

SAS PD and First Lego League – Jan 25th Competition
Jan 15th – The SAS Secondary Library is gearing up for the big First Lego Competition on the 25th. There will be 21 teams participating from around the greater Shanghai Region. The students have worked hard since last September and their culminating Tournament will occur on the SAS PD Campus. — More to Come
New Friday Hours
The Secondary Library will be open longer on normal Fridays for the rest of the school year. In order to support teachers and students access study, book, and resource materials the library has extended its operational hours until 4:20 Friday afternoons. The library staff hopes that this will provide students an additional space to work and study if they have to remain on campus late on Fridays.
SAS’s Poetry Slam 2014 – Anis Mojgani
Jan 8th- SAS PD HS is looking forward to Anis Mojgani’s Visit to the Campus. Anis is part of our Poetry Slam (Feb 24-28, 2014). Anis Mojgani is a two time National Poetry Slam Champion and winner of the International World Cup Poetry Slam. ATEDx Speaker and former resident of the Oregon Literary Arts Writers-In-The-Schools program, Anis has performed at numerous universities, festivals, and venues around the globe and has performed for audiences as varied as the House of Blues and the United Nations. His work has appeared on HBO, NPR, and in the pages of such journals as Rattle, Forklift Ohio, Used Furniture Review, and Thrush.
A founding member of the touring Poetry Revival, Anis is also the author of three poetry collections, all published byWrite Bloody Publishing: Songs From Under the River (2013), The Feather Room (2011), and Over the Anvil We Stretch (2008). A graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design, he still tries to make tiny spaces for visual art, doing the covers for his own books, and occasionally providing work for others, be it illustrations, the random poster, or whatever else may spark up. Originally from New Orleans, Anis currently lives in Austin TX in a little house with his wife and their dog, Trudy.
Welcome Back to School – 2014
Jan 6th– Welcome Back To School. This year (soon) will become the Year of the Horse. The library would like to welcome all the new students and parents to SAS PD. If you have any questions feel free to drop in. This week is a busy week for the library. Tomorrow the library welcomes the Annual Alumni Luncheon. On Wednesday Scholastic Magazines will be on campus. The library is also working up to this years Author Visit which will be a Poetry Slam. Take the time to read up on the Poets that will be on campus See the links on the Home Page.
