Welcome Back to School SAS

The Summer has passed very quickly.  New Hires and families are here and the library will be opening up processing materials on July 30th to get ready for the new school year.  Lots of new books have arrived and the Library will work quickly to get them ready for checkout.  Most should be ready by next week.  See you in the stacks!

Into July… Time is flying

July 2nd – We are into July and will fly back to Shanghai in 27 days.  It has been a full summer so far but the high-light was a drop in to the Library of Congress in Washington DC last week.  Wow.  We were not able to get all the way in, but touring the outside areas and seeing the Jefferson Library was a blast.  I will get images from Barbara Boyer soon to add.  It is real fun being a Librarian.  I have been into Barnes and Noble but for just a run in.  I have yet to have a good “shopping” time.  That is coming very soon, in fact next week.

We look forward to seeing our new hires at the end of July and all returning staff and students early in August.

PS.  Make sure to take the time to read a good book. I Have!

SYNC – Sync YA Literature Link

Jun 16th – It has taken me a bit but I have downloaded my first SYNC Audio Book.  The list this summer is good variety.  I have just downloaded “Code Name Verity” by Elizabeth Wein.  If you are in need a good current or classic YA lit audiobook to listen to this summer try out SYNC.  You will need OverDrive Media Console Software.  Best of Luck and good Listening!

Sad News — Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou, the author of many books, has died.  The library has pulled as many of her books as possible to create a tribute and we are running a powerpoint on our Library TV.  The images below, from NPR.org, Bing Image Search, and Amazon help give just a small taste of her powerful life and work.

We rejoice in her life and work while morning the lost of her voice….

Coffee with Margriet Ruurs in Shanghai

May 21st – What Luck!  The SLN planning meeting this last Saturday (May 17th) was able to touch base with Margriet Ruurs.  Margriet was in Shanghai working with a school and we were able to overlap.  It was a good time catching up and seeing what her plans were for the future. She will be globe trotting in many parts of the world as she continues her writing projects.  She has many many children’s books to her credit (Her Web Link).  One she spoke of that is close to home is “My Librarian is a Camel” – 2005.   From her web page.  If you have not viewed her page it is a great place to visit.

My Librarian is a Camel

“When we think of a Library, we picture a building on a street or perhaps a room in a school. But some libraries aren’t kept behind four walls. Some move from place to place in the most remarkable ways: by bus, by boat, by elephant, by donkey and more! These unusual mobile libraries are often the only way that people in remote areas such as in Thailand, Mongolia or Azerbaijan can access books.”

Thanks Margriet! and Best of luck in your trips!

School is all most over!

The 2013-14 School year is almost at its end.  Juniors and Seniors are busy taking AP and IB Tests.  Our Seniors have already started completing the sign-out process.  It is always a bit bitter sweet to sign a senior out, especially when they are the last of their family line at SAS.  As we sign these Seniors out we also inactivate them and their families.  We are glad for their successes and know that they will be a credit to the colleges, universities, jobs, and military services when they leave us, but as they depart they leave a huge whole in the fabric of our school life.  This reminds me of the SeedFolks Blanket the Middle School Family Book Read created.  Last Fall the library sponsored a family read event of the book “Seed Folks” by Paul Fleischman.  Many took up the offer and created a blanket square which has since been turned into a quilt.  Just as each character of the book helped form the tapestry of the community, each student and family help form the tapestry of SAS.  When they leave they take a bit of us with them, colors of the quilt left behind dim slightly.  Those of use left behind remember and eagerly await the beginning of the new school year when new students step up and begin their job of adding to the color and flavor of our living quilt at SAS

Best of Luck to the Seniors of the Class of 2014 as you graduate next weekend.  You will be missed!

Seed Folks Blanket – If you have not seen it yet, come by the library!
