Coffee with Margriet Ruurs in Shanghai

May 21st – What Luck!  The SLN planning meeting this last Saturday (May 17th) was able to touch base with Margriet Ruurs.  Margriet was in Shanghai working with a school and we were able to overlap.  It was a good time catching up and seeing what her plans were for the future. She will be globe trotting in many parts of the world as she continues her writing projects.  She has many many children’s books to her credit (Her Web Link).  One she spoke of that is close to home is “My Librarian is a Camel” – 2005.   From her web page.  If you have not viewed her page it is a great place to visit.

My Librarian is a Camel

“When we think of a Library, we picture a building on a street or perhaps a room in a school. But some libraries aren’t kept behind four walls. Some move from place to place in the most remarkable ways: by bus, by boat, by elephant, by donkey and more! These unusual mobile libraries are often the only way that people in remote areas such as in Thailand, Mongolia or Azerbaijan can access books.”

Thanks Margriet! and Best of luck in your trips!

Ying Chang Compestine Visits SAS Pudong

SAS Pudong was very fortunate today (April 15th) to have the honor of hosting Ying Chang Compestine, the author of “Secrets of the Terra-Cotta Soldier” – (co-authored with her son Vinson Compestine), “Revolution is not a Dinner Party”, “Banquet for Hungry Ghosts” and many more children’s picture books as well as adult cook books.  Ying Chang shared her story about growing up in China in the 1970’s with a number of our elementary classes as well as our 6th Grade level.  She outlined her history, her writing process, her adventures around the world, and her work in TV with cooking.  She detailed with many images her work with her son, Vinson, and their visit to China as they worked develop their book.  In her honor, the 6th Grade band lead by Lou Davies, played “Beijing Warriors”.  The library will post more of today’s events and pictures soon, but for now… Thank you Ying Chang for Coming to SAS Pudong! and we hope that we can host you again soon!

Dr. Ross Todd visits SAS Pudong

Wow! Dr. Ross Todd of Rutgers University dropped by the SAS Pudong Libraries this morning. We were honored and touched by his willingness to come and see both the Elementary Library (Kimbra Power) and the Secondary Library (Barbara and Tim Boyer). Dr. Todd had just completed a two day ACAMIS 2014 presentation to librarians at SCIS – Pudong where we were inspired to continue our work as librarians and to work to push the envelope as Teacher-Librarians in the ever changing world of Information Literacy. Dr. Todd stressed the point that we are needed and that we must work to do what it takes to assist in the creation of independent deep thinkers and readers. Thank you Dr. Todd for your time and efforts to support librarians and librarianship around the world.  Thank you so much for dropping by the SAS Pudong Libraries.

Poets Visit Feb 2014

Anis Mojgani SAS Video Posted

We just posted a Video slide show of many images from Anis Mojgani’s Feb 24th-28th, 2014 visit to Shanghai American School – Pudong on the Video Portal as well as this blog’s Library Moment Page. The Video Link can be found at http://sites.saschina.org/pdlibrary/about/library-moments/anis-mojgani-feb-24-28-2014/ .  Anis is a “MUST HAVE” poet.  He inspired us.

SAS was touched in our hearts and minds by Anis’s visit.  His poetry and his work with students drew students to him.  At the end of the week the SAS Pudong Poetry and Literary Club hosted a Poetry Celebration that drew over 100 students to the library to listen and share poems by candle light.  To get that many students on a Friday afternoon after school for 2 hours for poetry is huge.

Thanks Anis.  Where ever you go, know that you left a lot of yourself here at Shanghai American School and that we will “Shake the Dust” because you were here.  Best Wishes from SAS

Poetry Celebration “Slam” – Feb 28th

Feb 28 – The Poetry Week ended with a “HS Poetry Celebration” in the Library.  There was music, candles and food for the Mind, Heart, and Body.  A big Thanks to the Poetry and Literary Society Clubs for pulling off a great ending to the SAS Poetry Week.  There was a large crowd of students sharing their poems. Great Job to all who participated! Thanks also to Anis Mojgani, Sara Holbrook, and Michael Salinger for being at the event and helping us close off a full week of Poetry with a Bang!.  Pictures coming Soon.

Poetry Celebration Feb 28, 2014 at SAS Pudong

The Week of Feb 24-28 has flown by.  This Week at SAS Pudong, at all divisions, has been Poetry, Poetry, and More Poetry.  Anis Mojgani, Sara Holbrook, Michael Salinger, and Kenn Nesbitt have met with nearly all students on campus either in large assemblies or in small class settings.  Tomorrow is our last day with these 4 poets.  It will all end with a bang as they all gather in the Secondary Library and share with High School students and others one final look and listen.  Students will be presenting their work as well.  Pictures will follow, but for now, the time to the SAS Pudong Poetry Celebration is under 24 hours and counting.  Help us give our visitors a final cheer as they begin their transfer over to SAS Puxi.  The Poetry Celebration will run from 3 to 5 pm in the Secondary Library.  Snacks and Drinks provided by our HS Poetry and Literary Clubs.  See you there.

Note, 30 Hour Famine Students are more than welcome to come and share.

Poets at SAS Pudong – Wednesday Feb 26th

Wow, What a day.  Anis Mojgani, Sara Holbrook, Michael Salinger, and Kenn Nesbitt all had full days working with teachers and students at SAS Pudong.  The highlight of the day for many and especially the SAS – Pudong Librarians (Barbara, Kimbra, and Tim) was the Poet- Faculty get-together after school.  Anis, Sara, Michael, and Kenn came to the Secondary Library and gave an impromptu Poetry exhibition.  Each provided poems for the gathered teachers.  The poems were powerful reminders about about life, learning, love, parenthood, and being teachers.

Below are just of the few scenes from the Day
